An addict should really attempt as best as they can to stop abusing drugs. To a large extent, drugs are bad for you; mentally, spiritually and physically. It is not something that will go away easily. Some addicts fight for years to get off of their addiction. Some end up dying because of their addiction and some commit crimes and end up in jail due to their bad association with drugs.
When this person reaches the point where they no longer want to resist the help that is being offered to them and finally accept treatment, it will change their lives. Once in a drug treatment center, they will observe that there are others there with them as well. This will make them more comfortable in this kind of environment and it won't feel foreign to them. If they still want to go back to their old ways after seeing the tremendous burden that drugs puts on them, then their life may not be worth saving. For those who want to see a change and embrace that change, the obvious is to be noticed. They want to get better and get back out in society to prove that they can remain clean from drugs.
If you are one of those sensible individuals that don't want to relapse into drug abuse, there are certain steps that you have to follow:
Be sure to enter a follow up care program within the drug treatment center. Don't take it for granted and side step this action because you will regret. Some addicts feel as if they don't need this type of care and that they can handle things on their own. Once they get back out in society, they find that they were not as ready as they thought. They get back involved with the same crowd and end up back where they stared.
Don't avoid counseling. This is a heavy part of the treatment process in a drug treatment center. Counseling affords you an avenue to voice your opinion, your hurt, your pain and your concerns. You get to have a listening ear where no one else was listening to you before. You have someone to support you and motivate you and coach you back to recovery. Counseling helps the addict to respond to treatment better and understand what it was that caused the addiction. You get to have someone's undivided attention, probably, for the first time in your life. So utilize this type of treatment to your advantage.
Keep busy all the time because it will make you less prone to get in trouble with drugs. It keeps you more focused. Set goals that include a different lifestyle. Take up a sport or a hobby and partner with a friend or family member to make it more interesting. Temptation will come less when your mind is not focused on drugs.
Get all the help that you can from your friends and family members. These are the people who are genuine and will look out for your best interest. Let them be your guide, your eyes and your private counselor.
